  • FS: 1989 E30 M3 Cabriolet Replica

I had planned on keeping this car a bit longer, but a BMW M1 project candidate I've been chasing for a few years is becoming available to me.

For sale is my one of a kind 1989 BMW M3 Cabriolet Replica. I built this car with the intention of creating a comprehensive replica of the E30 M3 cabriolet, and I believe it to be one of the most complete replicas ever built.

The donor vehicle was my meticulously maintained and show-winning 1988 BMW M3 which was rear-ended in 2015. I built this car with every original E30 M3 component along with all-new parts purchased from BMW. This donor chassis started life as a rust-free accident-free Schwarz 325i convertible with a clean title and maintenance records from BMW Seattle.

In late 2016 I completed the complete S14 engine swap along with the M3 suspension, sway bars, brakes, and factory 5-lug. I also used the E30 M3 interior parts (complete with additional sound deadening) to complete the interior. The car was then sent off to Godspeed Fabrication in Auburn, WA for the bodywork conversion, which was carried out by one of the principle builders of the Griot's Garage Detailwagen, a show-winning SEMA car built with an E30 M3 touring body conversion. Absolutely no corners were cut nor expense spared in the building of this car.

In Spring 2018, I sent the car to Chambers Creek Motors in Lakewood, WA for finish work and a glass out repaint in the original Schwarz. In June, the car was selected to be one of four E30s in the Featured Showcase of the 2018 E30 Picnic, which is the largest gathering of E30s in the world.

    Here are the basics:
    1989 BMW M3 Convertible replica
140k miles on chassis, 213k miles on drivetrain (much of this rebuilt/new)
    Factory 2.3L S14 engine
    5-speed manual Getrag 265 transmission
    4.10 Limited slip differential
100% OEM BMW M3 sheet metal conversion with all new Genuine BMW M3 body panels performed by Godspeed Fabrication
Glass-out repaint in original Schwarz completed June 2018 performed by Chambers Creek Motors
    Clean original leather interior

The car looks stunning but I think you should have dropped that drivetrain into a 2002!

I would post this to the Facebook S14 group - more activity there than on S14.net.

            Hi Mike,

Thanks for that, not a dick comment at all. I figured this would come up in this thread and I'm very happy to explain my rationale.

A real E30 M3 cabriolet is easily in the $80-100k USD price range. (Remember there were less than 800 built and none were officially sold in the USA.) I'm selling my replica for half that, and it's also practically a brand new car with all the new parts and work completed.

I don't expect anyone to be cross-shopping this car with a M3 coupe. But it should be mentioned that Hagerty's Valuation tool lists a 1989 E30 M3 coupe at $63,600 average value, so my price is actually cheaper than that as well.

Thanks I'm very luck to have had a ton of help from great people in the community. I wish it didn't have to leave the stable so soon but I can't really justify keeping it with the new project coming in. The good folks at Alpha Team Motorwerks in Bellevue, WA along with my help did the engine work and swap. Valves are in spec, compression is great across the board and it runs better than it ever did in my Henna M3!

Black. Henna would definitely be my first choice but in these situations you can't really be picky, right?

Hey - LMK if you plan to bring it to any meets in the puget sound. I'd like to take a look in-person if possible. Be nice to get some pics together, too. I can try to get a few other e30 m3 owners to join.

                      This is how it starts...

Here's another way it starts: what work would I need to do to have this motor-swapped car signed off in California? Just curious...

                        Hahahaha....

I think it would fall under 1B here:
                        https://www.bar.ca.gov/Industry/Engi...uidelines.html

The engine "matches a configuration offered" by BMW in 1989 and all smog equipment is 100% factory. It also passes WA state emissions, but I'm not sure how relevant that is.

So it would need to be inspected to insure the proper factory components exist like the catalyst (which they do) and smog tested.

Yeah, I really don't want to see this car.

You need to add this to the collection!
