Really? There is TONS of information out there to read up on.
But essentially it only shares the silhouette with a street M3.

                E30 M3 / E30 325is / E30 325is / E30 318i / E36 ti / Alfa Romeo

There was more similarity than just shape, I am guess that is what you mean by silhouette. Motor racing back then is totally different from what it is now. Back then you started with a production car and made modifications to it and went racing. Nowadays they are purposed built tube frame designed with the intent of making it the fastest strongest and lightest thing they can make. My limited knowledge of the rules in DTM from my understanding was that BMW had to use the stock body panels, meaning steel fenders, the plastic bumpers that are found on the OEM car. I believe they had to use the engine block. There are more parts than just shape that ended up on the DTM car

I have seen pictures of the stock dash in DTM cars. I think the first tow US deliveries went to Korman and he made them into racers in the ISMA Endurance series. It was just a different time back then. Even NASCAR used cars from the showroom and modified them accordingly.
Drive it like you stole it!
