SlideM3, yes that's true. My driving habits have changed in 20 years as parts became harder to get. I still drive 1K to 2K miles a year, but now I do it on weekends early in the day. Gone are the days when I've commuted to work with it!

But that's BMW classics fault. When I owned a 40+ year old W108 and a 45+ year old W111 Mercedes, the Mercedes classic center in Irvine CA always had every part I needed! They were not cheap, but weren't outrageous like some of the E30 M3 parts! The front strut housings come to mind! I don't see this situation getting any better. We just have to preserve our cars as well as we can while still enjoying it.

Narayan3, sadly with outrageous prices like these just for parts, we will see even lesser M3s on the roads and they will be parked longer in the garage because owners don’t want to take the risks.

    Konig,
I hear what you are saying about not fleecing other car enthusiasts and I agree with that... But I also have to disagree with the rest of your post. I'm bored with a car in less than a year and spend the next couple plotting to get rid of it. For every car I've owned I've test driven and explored ownership of 10 other cars (10 different models, not 10 of the same) and frankly I'm jaded when it comes to cars. But somehow my e30 m3 has lasted 20+ years. For a lot of us THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE! At least not in this price range. I am frustrated by the parts availability issue. But I never feel that the trouble is not worth it.

I'm just happy there is one for sale at any price! If I need that and I can't live without it, this is a better choice!

Hobbyists ripping off their fellow hobbyists, love to see it.

    Great attitude to have.

If you're reading this, wondering if it's worth all this hassle and money to stay in the E30 M3 game when people are saying things like above and selling stuff at these prices, I'm happy to report that there are a lot of other amazing cars for the same (or much less!) money out there. Cars for which parts are available, reasonably-priced, and your fellow hobbyists aren't hoarding parts and demanding an arm and a leg for them.

I enjoyed my M3 and the owners I met, but I sold them because it just wasn't worth the prices anymore. (and when I sold it, I sold my nice parts to local owners for the same price I paid for them - imagine that!)

Moderators, sorry I came in here and derailed this thread. This thread touched a nerve with me and, in my opinion, reflects the biggest problem with the E30M community today.

Sometimes you have to be grateful that you can find what you need, E30M3 parts are getting hard to find.

asking is one thing. someone actually paying that much is a whole 'nuther thing.....until that happens, the short supply and high demand cycle is not proven.
