It is the interior cabin light assembly with the switch so it can be controlled separately.

Thanks for the link. That looks like the right light, but the site says it does not fit my 1990 M3, and the part numbers listed don't match the numbers I have for my car.
Can you confirm that this will fit my car?

Yes, it is plug and play, direct fit for the M3 as well.
