Ok, new to this. Is this just an airbox? The reason i ask is i live in Ca and wonder about the smog issues.

    Thanks,

i just bought this kit and im in CA too. it is an airbox and the alpha-n piggy back tune. you will want to buy a wideband o2 sensor (i got the innovate MTX-L) to go with this. As long as it is tuned well either by you or a dyno tuning shop, it should pass smog [won't pass visual inspection] with stock cats or maybe even aftermarket cats. if you don't get it tuned you may run rich and risk not passing smog and/or damaging your cats. i literally learned all of this last month and got a lot of good info from some members here.

PS Markus is a great seller. you wont be disappointed

This will not pass smog in CA. "Visually"

visually? What do they check? Do they know the difference between a stock and carbon collector? Here in germany it is only important that the results are ok
The only guys who could make problems here are the german TÜV guys

IF you bring your car to any smog station in CA to get tested. As soon as the "see" that the AFM has been removed, it would result in an automatic fail. They will not even test it. I'm not saying that A/N with CF box will cause your car to run poorly and fail.

                    strange
Here in germany you could make these smog test at normal car shops
And if you have some connections there you even don't need your M3 for that [peace]
I always use my girlfriends 20 years old VW for that
My friend is typing in the informations from my M3 and then testing the VW *lol*

this airbox is worth the risk.....it will transform your e30 m3 experience from something of greatness.....into....something AMAZING.

i always had the impression that where there is a will "to pass smog" or inspection....there is a way......as long as your car was safe otherwise. or maybe CA just blows when it comes to that sort of thing?

CA just blows. You can pass the actual tail pipe test well below the state max levels, but they'll still fail you if you don't pass the visual inspection.

the place i go to in sac doesn't check visual.

i had a test pipe on my TL and it passed. its clearly visible under the car and they never looked. i took out my cold air intake to be safe but they didnt pop the hood either! i guess it just depends where you go. visual test should be easy to squeak by

going completely under the table (smogging another car in place of your car) is a whole different world in CA. there's just too much liability for the shop that most places absolutely will not. there are a few hidden gems though if you look hard enough.. not that i have ever done that but i know people who have paid upwards of $300 for the service
