Windshield Replacement

I have a cracked windscreen and am needing to replace it. My glass guy tells me there isn't a E30 M3 OEM windshield to be had in North America. He says an option is to go back to the standard E30 windshield and gasket. Does one know where I can locate a windshield? I would appreciate anyone's opinon's and comments on staying with the original windshield with glue in gasket or modify and make the standard E30 glass and gasket.

I was on the same boat like you a couple of month ago, I tried to the standard e30, but doesn t work, I mean for me you can install, but is not the best, try to find and oem m3 e30 windshield go to the dealer, and order, I had luck in find an brand new oem local, goodluck with the search try getbmwparts.com

I got a new OEM windshield installed by Safelite last October. Ordered it from my local dealer without issue.

Have you contacted you local dealership? Last time I checked it was still available new from dealer.

I suspect your glass guy is trying to maximize profit (Read: finding an aftermarket piece of glass) and simplify install (Read: "Just use a regular e30 windshield").
I wouldn't let them touch the car if this is their modus operandi. When they mess up the adhesive, clog your cowl drains, and the cowl rusts away, will they then pay for that repair???

The regular e30 screen is a different physical size, I am afraid the glass specialist does not know what he is on about and I haven't herd any one being recommended remove that bonded screen and install non bonded type.

I just put new screens (front and back) in my evo II and they were like $500 each inc delivery to Australia. Only green tint available.

Thanks for the replies and input. I will be taking everyone's recommendation to get the factory glass from the dealer. I appreciate the feed back.

Refreshing this old thread - my windshield is pretty pitted after 230k miles, do I call a local BMW dealer to order correct spec glass? Still available? Also, would I have the dealer also do the install?

Edit - did a search by part number and it's reasonably available. I'll probably have a local dealer that has the part in stock do the install.

Make sure they know how to do an E30M3 windshield. It needs to be strapped in place with a good amount of pressure while the bonding agent dries.

Yes I'll be buying part number 51-31-1-953-990

It sounds like folks have had good success with Safelite for such a specialized job? (The dealer doesn't do glass install). Parts-wise all I need is the windshield and the gasket? (Gasket part number 51-31-1-945-082, is that the correct one?)

I personally wouldn't trust a chain windshield repair company to do it. I would bring it to a specialist.

I agree, take to specialist. I would not trust safelite.
