  • CA smog and rear end

Last month I took Henna to get CA smog tested, and the test couldn't be run because the gearing was too tall. I had a dog leg and a 2.93 rear end, and the gearing in second was below an idle so the test couldn't be run. I have to agree that the gearing was a little tall. So I switched to a 3.46 rear end and it passed smog, but the engine was turning 3000 rpm at 60 mph, which is too much. So next I switched to a 3.25 rear end, and the gearing is almost the same as with the five speed OD transmission and the 4.1 rear end. I think I'll run that for now. Larry

Right, 3.25 IIRC is what came on M3's with CR boxes.

3000 rpm at 60 seems about right. The engine isn't a torque monster so you want the lower ratio. Really, in my mind, the only gear that needs to change is 1st. 1st gear could be longer.
