  • What gearbox is in this M3 ?

I was looking around YouTube and see what looks to be a pre-production BMW training video. The car has a different gearbox, and also what I think is a pre-production engine fitted. Not speaking German, is this explained in the video or anyone know what gearbox it is or any interesting info ? Just Curious.

From the fins on the bottom, it looks like a gearbox I've seen in E34 M5's? I think Getrag 260 is the number?

Interesting. The car and video look pre-production, so maybe BMW switched late in the day to a Getrag 265 ?

            For subtitles:
            - select under the CC button "auto-generated German"
            - under settings choose auto-translate to English (or whatever your preference is). Not perfect but it gets the main ideas across.

Unfortunately, not much more info is given regarding the transmission:
            - "5 gear sports transmission with circuit design"
            - "appropriately designed new gear suspension as well as the stiffening shell between engine and gear"
            - "because of the higher torque it became also the pipe diameter of the joint shaft, enlarges the joint disk enlarged and strengthened, as well as that medium stock adjusted accordingly"

Translating the translation, it looks like they are talking about the dog-leg pattern / close ratio gearing, trans mounts, stiffer bell housing, bigger driveshaft, guibo and center carrier?

I stand corrected. 280 is what my old brain was trying to recall.

280 has ~40mm extension between front and rear cases.
Looks like 260 from late e28.

The engine pictured went into production for a very short time I believe as ETK lists the airbox for production dates up to Feb 87 and VIN 2190004. I have one as a spare part.
The intake hose diameter is the same size as the AFM diameter instead of bigger as the later version. That engine also lacks the air/oil separator as the valve cover breather hose connects directly to the airbox.
Above translations are correct BTW (stiffer bellhousing by virtue of the cover plate shown).

That's interesting re the engine, never seen one before. Anyone here got a very early VIN car with this ?
