  • 2.3 Engine identification

I have had an S14 M3 engine sat in my garage for a fair number of years and am unsure what variation it is.

Other than the 215bhp "234S2" part of the code, I was wondering if the last part determined it to be anything different to the normal 215 engine?

Code stamped on the block is 234S201A

    Date stamp is 1990.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards, Paul.

send the serial number of the block to BMW classic and they will match it up to a VIN#. That VIN# will tell you what you want to know. It is stamped on the flat section on top of where the starter mounts.

Thank you. I have the serial numbers etc. Iíve already given that to a BLW dealer parts guy who had been in contact with BMW who said they canít help... so Iíve just messaged him
                about trying classic or tradition.

It won't really make a difference as the engines were the same between those, apart from painted airbox and valve cover on Ravaglia/Cecotto vs regular M3 with 215 bhp.

I am not sure whether BMW Classic will give you the missing info with regards to chassis or engine numbers. They will confirm the numbers you give them as being how they have them listed in the archives (or not).
