I could be wrong but I remember thinking I didn't need it when slimming down the wiring in my race car and it ended up being for the tail lights? Unplug it and see if your tail light functions still work.

You are testing my memory.,,, I am 99% sure it is nothing to do with the stereo or speakers.
I seem to remember its some tail light junction (i think).

EDIT - I cheated and looked into the ETM, its the rear lights check relay. Look in the ETM starting at section 6314-0 and match up the wire colors.

More than you ever wanted to know here:
          https://e30journey.blogspot.com/2017...ake-light.html

In any case I cut all that stuff out when I rewired the car (its in a box in my basement).

I now have a one single 14/4 jacketed wire running front to rear replacing all of that wire in the picture and that includes spares LOL (1 wire for brake lights, 1 wire for rain light circuit, 2 spares)

Just cut it all out LOL

Thanks for the link, that was a fun read. As much as I want to rip that thing out, it's going back in till I have time to deal with it. :|

LOL, get yourself a 1' piece of a 3 or 4 conductor 14 gauge wire, hell it could probably be 16 gauge, especially if you convert to all LED tail lamps (thats what I did).
                    Hold it
Carry that tiny slender piece of wire around in your pocket.
Leave it on your desk during the day.
See how small light and simple it is.
You will be cutting that giant hunk of wire out in 3 days max lol.
                    Its so liberating.

Yeah that was a deeeeeep dive into such an obscure part.
I love when people do nerdy stuff like that.

That's what I'm afraid of - and once I start I'll end up pulling the dash out of the car. Like your rear subframe > master cylinder story.

It reminds me of this video.
                        https://youtu.be/AbSehcT19u0

I always reference that scene when I get carried away and sidetracked on projects.

looks like the central locking system ... unplug it to see if it unlocked/locks the fronts from the trunk..
