  • SIGFest 2022 BMW NA September 24th Event Wrap Up

Posted to the SIG earlier today by Tony Rausch:

    Gruppe:

SIGFest 2022 was a huge success! We had cool but comfortable weather, lots of enthusiastic participation, amazing food, interesting and informative technical presentations and (of course) really beautiful E30 M3's. For those who couldn't attend, here's a brief recap of the day:

    Friday Night SIGFest Opening Dinner:

We had a great turnout for the SIGFest 2022 dinner, at Fire and Oak in Montvale NJ. The dinner was sponsored by BMW of Tenafly (Thanks Stephen Hourican!), and included great foods, drinks and conversation with fellow BMW E30 M3 enthusiasts and owners.

    Saturday's Picnic and Concourse:

Saturday's 22nd Annual SIG Fest Concourse and Picnic event was held at BMW's North American Headquarters, in Woodcliff Lake NJ. In addition to hosting our annual gathering of E30 M3's, BMW NA staged the newest models including M Cars, MINI, Rolls Royce, BMW Motorrad, and BMW sponsored race cars. They also presented several different technical workshops with various engines on display, (including a working S38 on a portable engine stand), and in-depth technical presentations featuring BMW's advanced battery electric vehicle systems. Chefs were busy grilling burgers and sausages, and there was an ice cream truck serving frosty treats.

We had a great turnout, Saturday, with 60 E30 M3's, and about 150 SIG, S14 Members and guests. Those who registered received their registration packet, which included some great gifts from our sponsors- including a custom SIGFest travel mug- courtesy of Mario Langsten at VSR who was at the event. We were also honored to have Marc Norris in attendance this year- all the way from California. Marc owns and operates Bavarian Workshop and is a renown BMW specialist.

In the 22 years we have been running this event, I can't remember a year when more pristine cars turned out. Every car was really amazing looking, and no two were alike. There was such a variety of E30 M3's - from a few almost completely bone stock examples to highly-modified custom builds. After several hours of meeting new people, enjoying great food and experiencing incredible E30 M3's- it was time to hand out the car show awards. This year's trophies were custom made LED-backlit acrylic S14-valve cover panels. We always custom-make trophies for SIGFest, and refuse to award something traditional- and this year James created these amazing mementos. We presented the first one to BMW NA (Jay Hanson, Oleg Satanovsky, Tom Plucinsky) as a way of saying Thank You for supporting SIGFest.

It really, truly is a difficult task to pick winners for trophies at this event, so I feel a bit sorry for our judges each year. The collective knowledge of the judges / enthusiasts made selecting the winners a lengthy task, as they poured over the gorgeous examples. The trophy categories and winners were as follows:

Best of Show: All E30 M3's are amazing, but "Best Of Show" goes to the car that the judges unanimously agree is a cut above the rest. Brandon Wheaton's 89 Zinoberrot M3 edged out the competition. The car is stunning in every way. The leather interior is impeccable, and under the hood- it appears that Brandon had hired a staff of elves to clean every visible surface. The "Best of Show" title was at least a 5-way tie, and I am sure it was not an easy decision for our panel of judges.

Best Modified: Forget original paint, low miles, and restorations for a moment- "Best Modified" goes to the E30 M3 that is its owner's canvas. Most of these cars are modified in some way, but we are looking for a car that takes it to another level, either as a street car, a track car, an art car, or a combination of all of those. Our judges agreed that AJ Ashley's 1990 Sport Evo Replica won their hearts and this trophy.

Best Stock E30 M3: It's getting harder and harder to find a completely stock E30 M3. The casual observer may look at a car and think it is stock, but our judges are quite knowledgeable and notice everything. This award is presented to the car that is closest to stock, and the way the car would have been delivered new to a dealership. After all of the back and forthcomparison and discussion of the slight differences between cars- James Liu's gorgeous '88 Lachsilber and Cardinal M3 looked most like it rolled off of a dealer lot.

BMW NA's Choice: BMW NA has graciously invited us to their campus to celebrate SIGFest 2022, as well as the 50th Anniversary of BMW Motorsport. To show our appreciation, we asked BMW NA staff to select their favorite E30 M3. They selected John Rendina's Alpineweiss II 1990 M3 as the car they'd most like to keep, which is quite a compliment.

Road Warrior: The "Road Warrior" Award can be defined in a multitude of ways, which offers a good amount of flexibility to our judges since the all of the cars are beautiful in their own ways, and any of them are potential winners. This year "Road Warrior" described a car and an owner who has been involved in the SIG for many years, as well as track and autocross events. Jamie and AJ Kavalieros and their Alpine 1989 E30 M3 personify "Road Warrior", and made giving this trophy to them an easy decision.

SIG Meister's Choice: The "SIG Meister's Choice" Award is chosen by the organizers, (James, John and me) and goes to the car we like- for whatever reason. This year- it went to Paul Luparello's Brilliantrot 1990 Sport Evo E30 M3.

Dedication: The "Dedication" Award allows for flexibility in how it is defined. Sometimes we give this award to a person who may or may not ever have their E30 M3 with them, or perhaps they do not even own one at all at this time, but has shown dedication to BMW, the E30 M3, and/or the enthusiast community in general. The judges have to decide how to interpret this award and provide a brief explanation for their selection. This year- I am so thrilled to be the recipient of this award. My E30 M3 is very nice, t not nice enough to beat out the insane level of competition that usually comes to SIGFest, so I do not expect to win a trophy, and the success of this event is a reward all by itself. I'm very grateful for being awarded the "Dedication" Award!

After the awards were presented, we then raffled-off some prizes, donated by our generous sponsors, including a BMW Bicycle, BMW Sunglasses, BMW Rooftop Carriers, Bose Products, Gift Cards, Scale Models, Books and E30 M3 Parts.

A BIG thanks to James Liu and John Henriquez who do massive amounts of work to set up and organize this event every year. Thanks also to my wife Laura, James' wife Shauna, John and Luke Dunnock, Steve Valeski and the numerous other SIG members who helped out at the event this year.

Pictures will be viewable at the SIGFest Events website shortly.

As event organizers, James, John and I see our role in all of this as setting the stage for you, the stars of the show. These cars are now considered rare and valuable collectors cars, and that means that it's more important than ever to get them out of the garage. Far too many of these cars will become just part of someone's collection never to be seen again, so we encourage their continued use and enjoyment. Without all of the enthusiasm and active participation, the event would fall flat, so thanks for coming out and spending the day (and in many cases- the entire weekend) with us, and making SIGFest 2022 a huge success.

    Sincerely,

    Tony Rausch
