  • Does your DME get hot?

    Well my DME is shot.

Swapped in my brother's DME and the car ran again :Jake:

I ran it for about 10 min....does the DME normally get hot? Like not super hot, but hot enough that you dont want to keep your hand on it? Just want to make sure before i go digging thru the wiring to look for some shorts or something crapped up :shit:

Someone go for a ride and feel the DME for me please

And now that i need a new DME....where's the cheapest way to get one? Is our DME used on any other cars? Anyone selling a used one that works? :wee:

    Thanks

    Adam,
I can't help you with the DME temp but I would assume that it shouldn't get hot. I can't be certain though. One thing I can tell you is that when my DME died, I got my replacement from the Parts Bin. They get them from the reman place down in Florida...forget the name of it. They have a good reputation though. It was $600 and change before core. HTH...

I read something about the boshe dme in our cars somewhere (I think it was pelicanparts) and it had a list of all the bmw's and what dme's they had. And mentioned that some VW's would have the same ones, and could be purchase for cheaper, or dirt cheap in a pick and pull yard.

What was wrong with your DME? Did you find a problem with it?

However to answer your question, Yes, DMEs do get hot. The e34's DME got so hot that the DME box had a built in cooling fan and sensor. When the temp in the box reached a certain temp the cooling fan activated.

The first DME used componets that get hotter then the componets used in todays DME.

Dont know if this help you.:lostme:

          Thanks guys.

Hopefully that VW DME thing is true...anyone got anymore info on this?

Joe...i have no idea whats wrong with it. I just know it doesnt work:shit:

I looked inside quickly...didn't see anything major...i guess i'll have to go through it a lot more closely. For some reason i dont think i was getting spark with it.

Thanks for the info on the temp. I would assume it gets a little hot, i just wanted to be sure.

          Thanks again everyone [peace]

yes, DME's get hot. the case is designed as a heat sink. if you notice, the four screws that hold the PCB to the case also sandwich 4 metal spacers. those spacers help transfer the heat from the big transistors to the larger case for heat dissipation. i think some early DME's had raised mounting feet instead of the spacers, but were done away w/ for cost savings.

                Adam,
You likely won't find anything inside of it. I couldn't find anything inside of mine....thing was just dead.

                  Yeah...i didnt see anything...

BUT...i messed witha few things inside...just poking and prodding...

and i put the DME back in....and BAM...started right up and idled pretty well.

Then it died...and wouldnt start again...NO SPARKY AGAIN.

What the hell is wrong with my DME? Any ideas? :lostme: :lostme: :lostme:

Send it out to have it repaired, buy a replacement. A used replacement can be had for less than $300.

oh and PS... for posterity sake....

Sounds like something could not be making a good connection.

About the only thing I'd say you could do is look it over real good (read: magnifying glass). Sometimes you can see cracking in solder connections that are bad. If you know what you are doing, you can retouch a lot of these connections "just to be sure".

DME stands for something similar to Digital Motronic Electronics.
It's Bosch's name for the ECU in your car. It's a computer of sorts that controls gasoline and spark delivery for your car.

                            Thats what i just did

Found one of the two large grey resistors' connection was loose at the bottom of the DME. I guess its time to do a little soldering :Jake: and hope that was the issue :Apu:
