  • Check Engine Light

So my 88 has a CEL. I'm trying to get it to pass emissions but I dont think it will pass with the CEL on. Any way to check out what the problem is with the CEL being on?

E30 M3's don't have a "check engine" light. They are OBD exempt.

Ohh wow I didnt know that. I guess the korean guy at the emissions station was just being a dick then. I pointed out the blinking CHECK like and he said no. I even told him it was an 1988. Im guessing I should just go to another station.

They are misinformed. The blinking "check" light is not a "check engine" light. The check light is for the active check control panel.

Makes sense. My check panel has the brake light on. This is why the check is blinking? Its one of my turn signals so it should be an easy fix.

Just hit the button on the panel and it will turn that light off.

Today I failed my smog check because the tech operating the test claimed that the "check engine light" must illuminate when the key is moved to position 2 (ignition position) and then be distinguished once the car is started. Is this true? I honestly think that the tech who inspected my car was a complete idiot, however I could be wrong.

I would really appreciate any input on this seeing as my registration is going to expire this month if I cannot pass a smog check.

If your car is original, there should be a sticker on the driver's side strut tower (or wheel arch, I forget) which indicates the car is OBD exempt.

Oh man. Not this issue again!
i thought somebody on here (who was a smog tech) had submitted papers and corrections to the state to correct this issue?
I had the same problem and i showed the smog tech the "OBD exempt"sticker and he then dug through some appendices or another book and he saw that I wasn't BS-ing him. Apparently some Jeep Cherokees have a similar problem and were also listed.

                        Pics?

I'm only asking because my car does not have this sticker on the drivers side shock tower mount. The only sticker that makes mention of the emission system that I'm aware of is on the inside of the driver's side fender, however it only details the emission system vacuum hose routing.

Can't one just get the owners manual to the page where it says what the check light is for and show that to the tech?

This is the one I'm referring to. It says OBD exempt:
