My m3 should be a Cecotto but the orginal dash is gone, can you tell from the VIN number

Cecotto vin numbers are AE40337, AE40339, AE40341 and AE40367-AE40868.

Great so I have ae40846 any way of getting a pice of paper or documented source to confirm this as part of the cars history

Yes, get a certificate from BMW Mobile Tradition, it will state the model, chassis no, engine no, paint colour, upholstery, optional extras bought, date of manufacture, date of delivery and to what original dealer it was supplied.
Cost about 50 euros.
