  • Building a 320is clone

    Hello all, I used to own and mint 1991 318is Alpine white, tan interior, with only about 100k miles on it sold it to a friend who blew the motor.
    Long story short he pulled the blown motor out of the car and gave up on it a few months ago so I bought it back from him.
    A few pictures attached - I no longer own the M3

    I loved the nimble drive quality of the 318 but not the m42 motor so I found a very nice 2.3L s14 that was refreshed with all the accessories for sale locally. My plan is to build a 320is clone with some mods, so I guess I'd end up calling it a 323is.

    So far my build plans included;
    Refreshed 2.3l s-14 with 5k miles
    US Getrag 265 5-speed - Found used with 52k Miles on it
    4:10 LSD already in car
    Evo II lightweight flywheel
    Sachs clutch kit
    320is Instrument Cluster - found on ebay germany - not cheap
    OEM header, VSR1 - center section and Strumung exhaust
    Getting a set of ronal r10 trubo wheels

    I was wondering what diff the 320is originally came with ? The smaller 168mm ring gear in the 318 or the medium case 188mm diff??

    This should be a straight froward swap and I hope to have the car done by the spring.
    I will start to post some picutures of the build soon

    Best wished with your project. Looking forward to the progress. Sorry, I can't help with the diff. question. But as far the cluster, how does it differ from a regular M3 cluster, besides having white needles?

      According to bmwfans.info, it should have the 188 differential.
