  • E30 M3 Rebuild/Turbo Project

    After over 2 years of ownership, I decided it was finally time to tear apart the powertrain and rebuild to turbo spec. This thread may be a little premature since I have just finished tearing everything down and have yet to begin actual reconstruction. Though, I plan to keep updating as constantly as progress is made.

    So what ere your turbo plans? Top or bottom mount? Compression ratio are you planning on running. What turbo do want to run and how much boost? Love to hear your plans. Good luck and keep posting the progress.

      I have a set of brand new Mahle 8.5:1 pistons for a 2.3 (94mm) for sale.
      Let me know if you're interested.

          -9:1 Compression
          -Debating between a GTX3076R and a GTX3582R (leaning towards 30R)

          Thanks, but I do have other pistons arranged.

          The wheels are indeed Enkei RPF-1. I have been very happy with the quality/performance thus far.

            Very nice setup and I would agree with you to go with the 3076R. Some nice cylinder head porting, good set of turbo cams and shim under bucket setup. That should get up and go with little lag time. Keep us posted and would love to see a full build thread and dyno results.

              I am running a Gt3076R with my 2.5 set up and it is perfect. No lag whatsoever and pulls hard from about 2000rpm. At 9 psi I was making about 270RWHP and at 14psi I make around about 400RWHP. I need it back on the Dyno to get the exact numbers but they are that important. It's how driveable it is that I like.

                To OP...kudos to you for adding another turbo S14 to the board. I'm going down the same path, just a little slower than I'd like.

                To Dave...those numbers sound like music to my ears. I'll run a GT3076 (twin scroll) and would like to limit myself to 1 bar boost. I look forward to it!

                  just out of curiosity, why do you recommend shim under bucket for a turbo?
                  I was under the impression that high revs are not required with a turbo setup and the standard shims are good for 8k rev (if not a little more)

                    A long overdue update. The progress will be slow until the summer. I am a full-time Mechanical Engineering student and I am doing all of the work myself so finding time is difficult!

                      Finally got a good amount of parts in. Now ready to start reassembling the engine.

                      -Pauter 4340 X-Beam Billet Connecting Rods
                      -Cometic MLS Head Gasket .051"
                      -ARP Main and Head Stud Kits
                      -VAC/Calico Coated Main & Rod Bearings
                      -VAC Vertical Oil Pan Baffle
                      -Massive Horizontal Oil Pan Baffle
                      -New OEM BMW Oil Pump
                      -New OEM Timing Chain Guides/Tensioners

                          Made some progress these past two days. Cylinder head is at the machine shop getting a 3-angle valve job among other things. Will post pictures of that as soon as I available.

                          Changing the core plugs

                          Cleaned up the journals

                          Crankshaft in

                          Spent the majority of the afternoon setting the gaps on the piston rings. Very tedious!

                            Update 6/21/12

                            Cylinder Head back from a full rebuild (3 angle valve job, new valve guides, resurface, clean, inspect, etc.)



                            Cam carrier cleaned up:

                            Pistons/rods in:

                            Oil pump shimmed and installed with new chain:

                            Refreshed the rear main seal:
