  • Ex Will Hoy 91 BTCC championship winning car lives !

Those who get Total BMW Magazine, will have seen the article on the Don Grice M3 that was painted in the Vic Lee Motorsport/Omega/ Listerine colours in this months issue. The article stated that the real 1991 championship winning car is now in South Africa. Now it's pretty well known that the car was sold to privateer Matt Neal for the 92 season where it was crashed in the penultimate race at Donnington. Several people have stated that the car was never repaired and was assumed to be no more. Well , I found a website for Matt Neal and thought I'd ask the man himself, and it's good news ! It turns out that the car was repaired and does indeed live in South Africa.
    Here's Matt's reply ....

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was in an accident yes, at the penutimate round of '92. However it was repaired to perfect order!

It was sold to a business man from South Africa and was shipped out there in '93. I heard it just sat there not doing anything for a couple of years, until the said business man was rumbled for importing goods (cars etc) and not paying South Africa's massive import duties.

All his assests were seized by South African customs and sent to public auction. Unfortuantely we only found out about this afterwards as it was not a specialist auction, the M3 went for the equivalent of a mere 4,000. Makes you sick doesn't it.
Last i heard it had been hacked about to make a thunder saloon

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a couple of pics of the crashed car in 92 . The other is the Grice car that was painted as Will's car as a tribute during a BTCC event last year .

Oh yeah . Finding good pics of the real car is a real pain. Anyone got any good pics ?

      Brian,

Great research and full marks to Matt Neal for taking the time to respond.

It almost sounds like he would have liked to have brought the car back again.

            4K .....I almost cried :sosad:

I have posted the link to this thread for Matt's attention. I did try and press him for any more info and to come and say hi over at s14.net . I guess as a BTCC driver, time is very limited for messing about on computers. But you never know.

What we need now is someone in the UK with connections to South Africa and the BMW club/racing scene there to find out where the car is . But where would we find such a person *cough* EvadM3 Dave *cough*

Matt just added some extra info for those interested.

As for the old M3, no it didn't need re-shelling, it was ok. Out of the 4 VLR cars, 2 went to South Africa. One was one of old Labatts cars and other was mine which was Will Hoy's. Tim Harvey's Labatts car was bought by a BMW specialist in Telford, Nigel Mosely. Where it sits in mint condition. The other was kept by Ray Bellm (Will's team mate) and was sat in his garage for a few years. Don't if he still has it now but was in mint condition also.

Thanks Brian and congrats to Matt Neal who yesterday became BTCC Champion, OK things have changed over the years but Matt did cut his teeth driving an E30 M3 in the BTCC, amazing it has taken so many years for him to become champion.

                      no, the Tim Harvey car
Moseley has it for sale if you are interested. Not cheap, though.

I just looked at the pictures again and that definitely looks like an S14. I thought that when somebody says it is a zetec engine that it is a Ford engine - is Zetec a builder of high-perf engines?

                      cheers,

The Labbats/ Harvey / Mosely car was meant to have been for sale at auction a few weeks back. I never did get an answer as to if it sold. It most deff has the genuine S14 lump fitted.

Don't know of any engine builder by the name of Zetec. The original Vic Lee Motorsport engine builds were done my Eurotech in the UK.

Looks like an S14 to me. There is an engine builder called Zytek http://www.zytekgroup.co.uk/

my duhhhhh! - just looked up the email that Nigel sent me - it is an S14 running on Zytek management...
Somebody else mentioned that it was a zetec engine and that is what stuck in my memory ...

                              from Nigel:
Spec: 2.0 S14 Vic Lee engine on Zytek Management, Farndon crack & rods, Acralite or Omega pistons, Slide, side exit exhaust. 91 spec back axle, tank under floor, (new with premier certificates) all steel body panels Hollinger 6 speed dog leg gearbox 18" Dymags & 4 spare 17"s all origional paintwork since 91 when it won its last competitive race in the BTCC.
