I talked with a guy that has one of those pans, he paid 2500 dollars US about 5 years ago for an original Gr.A pan off an ex DTM car, as far as I know, he was saving it for a grp.A engine build up for his E30 track car. Talk about an expensive track engine!
OK, 2500 clams for a used part? I dont know about you guys, but I think that part could be made for less if the demand was high enough. I think I could draft up that pan in ProEngineer in about 2 hours and send it off for casting. There is really nothing complicated about the design itself.
Guess what I am saying is that I dont understand why people would pay so much for something, when they could have made it for cheaper. ie: Look at the price of the aftermarket pans, far less than $2500.
One thing about Motorsport parts is that they had the budget to make several designs, blow up a few motors and find the best solution. Suppose thats why these go for so much. They are tried and true stuff!!
it all depends what your revving, what kind of tires
(slicks) your running.
Ive posted before a simple mod to all stock oil pans...
you see it in the gr. A oil pan too. Instead of getting
to carried away with VERTICAL baffle, baffle it horizontally.
This prevents you from dumping the oil into the timing
case under hard braking. The idea here is that,
1) you brake very deep into the corner
2) this empties your oil pan
3) you are mid corner with no oil
you can have an accusump to follow thru, but proper baffling
and or gr. A oil pan solves that problem for the most part.
So far I havent seen an aftermarket pan on par with the
gr. A version overall. Joe, if you can design the gr. A
part 1:1 and get it casted, Im sure youd find 10-20 people
interested? I think I could take 5 of your hands up front.
feel like doing the work and getting quotes?
Well, I found a couple aftermarket oil pans for under $900.00. Just to compare the quality and design.
I believe there are good as Motorsport pan but you decide.

John,
It would be a fun project to try. My only concerns would be not having an actual pan to grab measurements from, and finding a decent metal casting company in the area. My experience with a few of the closer ones in the San Francisco area is that they do terrible work as most of their parts came out of specification, castings that were too rough, or took forever to get prototypes to the door.
One company I worked for literally had pallets of junk castings from 2 suppliers just sitting around due to their poor quality.
Ill look into it though to see if there are some other places that would turn out small batches for us. Anyone have suggestions on this?
