  • UK M3 Restoration

    Hi guys,
I’m Jason and have been reading the threads on this great forum for the last 12-18 months, I finally decided to join up! The information and knowledge within s14.net has been very helpful I have been reading through many of the threads, the Project Cars section is of particular interest.
I bought my car in 2003 it’s a 1989 UK car originally sold from Cotswold BMW. I was so pleased to finally own an e30 M3 the car was viewed through rose tinted glasses it wasn’t perfect but it had road tax and an MOT so I parted with £4000 and it was mine. The car was my daily driver until at the end of 2005 I decided to take it off the road and fix a rust hole under the fuse box. I work in car body repair and wasn’t too worried about making a plate and welding it in……….Truth is it stayed in the garage waiting patiently for its plate until January 2009 (umm my bad). I got around to moving the fuse box out the way and was horrified by what I was seeing the inner wing had tore from the bulk head to the turret and I could see a lot more rust damage. I started to strip out the left side of the engine bay, the area where the wheel tub meets the flat for the ABS unit was also badly corroded. The shell was in terrible condition and to be honest it was dangerous, how the front stayed on is really a miracle. This left me with two choices crush the shell and try and sell off some parts from it or restore the shell. It was an easy decision, I have worked on hundreds possible thousands of cars over the years and never once done one for myself.
I am going to post up some photo’s of the work so far and attempt to write up something worth reading. This is my first forum and thread so please bear with me……..

            Jase,

That is pretty bad! Have you thought about having it dipped?

Hi Steve.......She's a real mess isn't she, dipping wasn't an option for me its just too bad even after dipping I would of been replacing many panels so I decided against it. Once I stripped off the ancillaries it was plain to see where the problems were and that all of the outer panels with the exception of the roof would need to be replaced.

Thanks for saving one of our beloved cars. You are without doubt a brave soul, but being in the trade is a plus I suppose.

                  Good luck.

Blimey, lot of work to do there. I guess at least you paid what must have been about as cheap as a complete M3 ever sold for.
Good luck with all the work on the shell, will be watching this restoration as my car has pretty much rust in all the same areas.
This space is a sanctimonious shit free zone.

Hi Jason, yes the rust is bad but don't let it put you off, my car was pretty bad aswell (not as bad as yours) but I done a full restoration and it did cost alot of money but it is well worth it, if you have any questions, just ask.

                            Good luck,

                            GARY.
